Green timber milled to your requirementA new service for timber users is the sale of milled green timber for seasoning. This is suitable for those businesses and individuals with storage space, a suitable trailer, and who are interested in very economically priced timber from local sources. Alternatively delivery may be arranged. Buyers should register their interest in advance, so that the milling can be organised. Prices will be from £7-8 per Hoppus foot, depending on the thickness and species. The thicker the boards, the lower will be the cost of milling. Total volume ordered should be over 35 Hoppus feet. At this price, the timber is about 4-6 times cheaper than buying seasoned timber from a hardwood timber merchant. Furthermore, air dried timber does not have the greater tension and varying colour differences which kiln dried timbers can have. Vat is not charged. Available green timbers will depend on forthcoming forestry operations in the year. Milling for 2010 will include lime and poplar. The lime will be available between 30-40 cm diameter. It is a soft, light, fine-textured timber, resistant to splitting. It is classically used for carving, and is easy to work and machine. Poplar is also soft and light, is stable and absorbs shock and bruising. It is suitable for furniture carcassing, flooring and general building if kept dry. Poplar butts will be available up to 70 cm diameter. Milling will be on site in North East Essex. Logs will be measured and their volumes marked on them in Hoppus foot. Following milling, boards will be reassembled in order, with the marking clearly visible. Interested buyers will be told when their timber will be ready for collection.
